Mitchell won the Pulitzer Prize for the novel and it was made into a blockbuster movie two years later, starring Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable as the main protagonists. The film won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Vivian Leigh) and Best Supporting Actress (Hattie McDaniel, the first black performer to win an Oscar).
